Family Therapy
Do your relationships need help, are you reacting to the same issues repeatedly with feeling unable to move forward? Are you wishing to understand and feel understood but feel stuck and unable to reason or reconcile a satisfactory conclusion?
If you are reading this then you are most likely considering family therapy. Family therapy is appropriate for all ages and can even be useful for individuals. The term family can cover a range of relationships and is generally used to describe a group of people who care about each other or share ties or history. Family therapy gives families the chance to express and explore their feelings in a safe, non-judgemental containing environment. Working alongside a therapist family members can discuss difficulties within their relationships with the aim of improving communication and how we see ourselves within the context of relationships. I am aware of the importance of ensuring the space is safe, contained and sensitively address unhelpful tendencies including any sense of ‘ganging up’ or blame. It is important to explore the true emotions behind presenting behaviours and yet often when we feel under attack we default to a familiar, yet often unhelpful response which can drive us further apart. I will provide a neutral space that is validating, gentle and yet challenging. Support and guidance can be particularly helpful at poignant stage of the lifecycle such as adolescence, new parenthood, menopause and adjusting to older age. Family therapy is extremely useful in helping people struggling with a range of difficulties including wanting to understand and narrate ones life journey and family history.
